I went to see 18 meals with a person in whose discretion I have complete confidence. But this time without having any information about the film. I knew it was English, but who was the director nor the actors. Nor is the argument. And is this an exercise that I recommend. Watch movies without prejudice or preconceptions. Being
schematic, silly and reductionist, I would say this film is a "cross to the Galician lives." Let's see: A street musician (Luis Tosar) is reunited with the former love of his life (Hope Pedroza); Two drunk mixed drinks with seafood breakfast; A man (Pedro Alonso), cooker and kitchen, for women that never comes; Two men (Victor Clavijo Sergio Peris-Mencheta) who are dating and living together to construct a lie the visit of the brother of one of them, a cook dreams of becoming a singer, a girl (Christina Brondo) wants what a man twice her age, does not give; An elderly couple, who already has said it all in life, breakfast, lunch and dinner in a perpetual silence ... A complete catalog of feelings and emotions, served around a table.
The film is structured in 3 parts that correspond to the three most important meals of the day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Earlier, a female voice, totally expendable, introduces us to the narration of street images of Santiago de Compostela, the city where the entire film takes place in the time span of a single day. The use of food as an excuse to structure the film, with stories that sometimes overlap and sometimes not. The director Jorge Coira achieved using a very handy way to tell lately, drawn from everyday situations that alternate between drama and comedy, moments of real truth, huge chunks of life that naturally engage the viewer and not abandon him. The drama and humor esquinadop appear together, sometimes in the same plane. A Sometimes humor is what is said and tragedy as we see, and sometimes it's the opposite. And not only that. Chur is able to avoid the typical topic of manners that takes over many of the fictions of English cinema, makes it to the universal from the nearest localism. Let us add a great script (on which the actors had leeway for improvisation), a staging fresh and dynamic, a mounting fluid (which took 6 months, then came to film Chur almost 90 hours) and a good soundtrack, to certify that we have a small deli that you can enjoy all kinds of audiences. And this dessert tasting menu Galician 18 meals has a superb acting job, which manages to convey all the intensity and tension in some scenes, all the everyday miseries, in fluids of great spontaneity dialogues.
18 meals, a tasty, highly recommended, easy to digest, bittersweet but palatable. A gastronomic delight.
